Name: Groundwater Permitted Sanitary Discharges
Display Field: SiteName
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPoint
Description:

Groundwater discharges are regulated by EGLE and treat sewage by separating solids from liquids through settling, skimming or sieving, and then generally apply the liquid to the ground. The liquid waste then percolates through the ground (similar to a septic system), allowing time and filtration from the soils to further treat the effluent. Groundwater discharges are not expected to be a source of E. coli to surface water if they are functioning properly. More detailed information, such as discharge monitoring reports and compliance history can be found on the MiWaters Site Explorer. Fields include permit number, permit category, type of facility, and facility name.

To learn more, see the Statewide E. coli TMDL, Section 7.4.D (Nonpoint Sources, Groundwater Discharges). Available at http://www.michigan.gov/EcoliTMDL.
